Beaming

A Forum to Discuss NOTION

Thanks, robbo.

I thought you knew the answer to your own question. No, you cannot beam across barlines in Notion. Some software developers might want to take issue with your description of this as "pretty basic" - and some musicians as well. There is plenty of music written before Brahms (I think it was) started to do this as a purely graphic aid to show non-metric phrasing. And plenty music after Brahms as well, for that matter. There is so much "non classical" notation that is way beyond Notion; this is just one example.

For "essential flexibility" you may want to continue using that composer-named application. The other big one (the F word) can't do this either - at least not elegantly. I get the idea that a truly wonderful implementation of cross-barline beaming is actually pretty difficult to provide, especially if it has to work in all possible varieties of beam patterns.

I am looking instead for a long list of far-less exotic (if you'll pardon my downgrade of your request) improvements, bug fixes and feature additions in Notion, before this one will seem urgent. But that's probably just me...

Another two years may be enough? Possibly?

Oh, good. Well, that'll be nice, won't it? I mean, we've waited for that wall about as long as Hadrian...
No-no, Hadrian. The emperor Hadrian. He had a wall... It doesn't matter. I'll explain next week.
Thank you so much. Goodbye.

Hi Fabio,

Bad news travels a lot faster than good news: I just needed to use my own solution in a 3/4 piece, and I now find that my workaround is no good if the first note of a measure is a quarter (followed by four eighths). Aargh! Maybe I'll just go watch another rerun of F.T....

Returning to your original post a bit late, I think I found an answer to your question — although I don't understand why it works:

In the Time Signature dialogue box, entering "3" for upper, "4" for lower, and "5+1" for beaming pattern, produces the result you asked for 2 years ago.

Best,
Thorrild

3+3 also works fine for all 6 eights beamed together. But it raises a new question: should it?
