That was it,

changing the privileges on the sounds folder did the trick.

it is odd that it was showing read/write to Admin, but i had to add my actual admin account name for it to work!

That's great news David. I'm not sure why that happened to you but I have seen this type of thing on the Mac side of the world before. You might still want to run the permissions repair from the disk utility to be on the safe side. Let me know if anything else comes up.
