Dynamics not applying

Postby achambily » Thu Feb 24, 2011 7:55 pm

Could you explain why dynamics no more apply starting at bar 23 in the attached notion file ??

I don't see a Notion file attached.

here is the file (sorry, upload didn't work this night).
I can add that I have exported the file to a midifile and I have seen in Reaper that velocities do not change starting at bar 23. So this is certainly an issue related to Notion which is no more interpreting the written dynamics...
(but it is very strange that this suddenly happens...)

I've found that if you start attaching dynamics above the staff, subsequent dynamic marks below the staff are ignored. In bar 21, you have attached the forte above the top three staves. Remove them, re-attach them below, and all should be well. I suspect that if you really want these three marks to appear above the staff, you can drag them northward after you've entered them, but I'll leave the experimentation up to you. Notion's quirks in handling dynamics have bothered me for a long time, and I've reported this as a bug. Maybe you should do the same thing, so that we can make the wheel squeak a little louder.

Best wishes,

Thanks for the tip, it works...
But, it's VERY abnormal, no ? (the position of the thing should not matter at all)
So, you're forced to write all the dynamics below the staves ?
Why not (despite the fact it's not what I learnt at school), but why the hell is it allowed to put them above if it is known that it doesn't work ?!

Did you read through the entire thread that the Admin linked to? I think the thread will help answer your question. We need the ability to apply dynamics above and below the staves in order to write different dynamics for different voices on one staff.

It DOES work...If you read the thread I linked you'd have learned that. I didn't want to get into this discussion again because we went into great detail in the previous thread. Basically I'll sum it up:

Dynamics do work above and below the staff, you just have to choose which you'd like before you begin composing and stick with it. You can write both above and below (if you're writing parts for distribution) but once you've "mixed" the placement of the dynamics only one of them will function (either above or below).

I read the other thread but I didn't understand everything ;)
So, if I sum up again, I have to choose "above" or "below" but is this choice intended just for an instrument (a staff) or for the whole score ?

I think I can answer your question, but I'd like to test the score you uploaded before I try to answer your question. I'll look at the score over the weekend and summarize how I get dynamics to function correctly.
