You can also attach an articulation to a note before you actually add it to the score. For example, hitting 'q' for quarter note followed by '3' will add a sharp to that quarter note (no need to edit the note after its been inputted).
With regards to selecting a note and shifting up or down (once already on the staff), I don't see how it can get any faster. The slowest part about it is selecting the note, the actually shifting (shift + arrow keys) is pretty darn quick compared to other programs.

I requested this many times, let us enter notes by the keyboard, and let us alter the last placed note without having to select it (though since then it turned out that it seems I'm the only one who misplaces notes due to my too fast mouse settings).
