recording midi into reaper

Postby Erufailon » Mon Aug 16, 2010 12:45 pm

I know this is the Notion forum, and the problem I'm about to describe is in reaper, still since others use it as well, I hope someone can help me.
So if I connect N3 to reaper and I play my stuff back through it (with the midi-out ports), everything sounds fine. However if I record the same midi stuff in reaper and try to play it back the keyswitches don't always work, especialy on the fast stuff. It's as if reaper quantized it to the grid, so sometimes I have 3 keyswitch messages at the exact same moment (and the note as well), and only one of them applies then. I know notion sends it right, because it sounds ok if I just play it back (reaper still acting as the host), but it's not ok if I record it. In the recording options quantizing is turned off, so it shouldn't do that.

Any idea, anyone?
Thanks

Can you post some basic projects (nothing too big) for us to look at? Also, (I think I know the answer based on your resonses in another thread) are you running the two programs out of sync? Or do you have them connected with rewire?

Hi,

I'll respond here. I managed to get rewire working. I have to press record once in reaper, and after that I can use play/stop in Notion as well, and it starts/stops playing in reaper.

I tried to upload an example, but the forum says prules extension is not allowed and you would need my custom rules to check it, and also EWQL MOR. :) Generaly it can be reproduced with any keyswitching patch that has some rules through the midi-out port, especially if it has a reset rule, which ensures that at least 2 kexswitches trigger on each note. Also on 90bpm and 16th notes I'm sure to run into this problem. But as I said it's not a notion problem, if I'm not recording, just playing the track back through reaper, it works fine, and the same data leaves Notion in either case.

I don't really know of any settings that automatically record to a grid (though you can certainly try disabling any "snap to grid" settings and see if that helps); I'll look through the manual and see if anything pops up.

You're not trying to playback in Notion while playing the recorded tracks in Reaper are you? Doing this may cause double note hits which would cause issues if Reaper and Notion are out of sync with each other (even if just by a few milliseconds).

I forgot about that requirement; I have Notion saved as a staff preset in Reaper so all of the correct settings are already applied, so I didn't even think about some of the staff settings like arming the track for record. Sorry about that.

Nope. But does it work fine for you? I mean when you record keyswitches to reaper through a virtual midi cable, does it work fine?

I haven't really had a reason to try. I'll give it a shot this evening and see what happens.

By the way, do you still have the rule creation tool for the MIDI ports (or was that someone else on the forum)? I haven't really needed it before, but I think I'd like to try using it with EWQL choirs.

You can find it in this forum. I'm using it all the time. Just be on the lookout for the bug I mentioned in the last post, it can be nasty, and I haven't fixed it yet, sorry about that :)

So I tried to write MIDI keyswitches for EWQL choir, and I think that was a little ambitious. I'm going to try to do a more simple test with GPO and see what happens. Sorry for the delay.
