plug-ins you've found that work/don't work?

Postby David Smith » Sun Mar 28, 2010 4:22 pm

Since N3 has VST, I went looking to see what was around. There are two kinds: instruments and effects.

I've discovered no "comprehensive lists" thought there are many sites with short lists. I've found that older ones (before ~2006) generally won't work (cannot be enabled with VST Mgr), and newer ones may or may not, even from the same company. Also, VSTs can be located in a subfolder, and you don't have to quit the app to add new ones.

Here's what I've found so far. I'm hoping others will add to this list.
(Note that I'm not saying you should *use* any of these. ') Results are using Mac OS 10.5. I suspect Windows users will have better results, as there are many more choices.

---- work -------------
4Front Bass.vst (4front technologies)
RoughRider.vst (Audio Damage)
PulseModulator.vst (Audio Damage)
bs-spectrum.vst
STTool.vst (Flux)*
MPL-1 Pro SE (Kjaerhus Audio)
Synful Orchestra
strings Dream DEMO

---- don't work -----------
Melodyne plugin.vst
Overtone GEQ.vst
S(m)exoscope.vst
PersonalOrchestra.vst (bundled with another app)
TickyClav.vst
Elephant.vst (Voxengo)
dmiFlute (OS X).vst
BitterSweetII.vst (Flux)
dahornet.vst

*nice

http://www.kvraudio.com/allpluginsononepage.php

http://www.kvraudio.com/get.php (database search function)

Is about as comprehensive list as you will find I think.

It has a pretty big active forum and the database has search functions aswell. Lots of VST developers hang out there aswell. A recommended site.

To add to your Notion List (will update as i go along with the VSTs I use ):

Works:

PSP Nitro
Sampletank 2XL
Voxengo Gliss EQ 2
Fabfilter Timeless 2
Fabfilter Twin 2
4tune

Hello David,
I was interested to hear that Synful Orchestra plug in worked for you. I have not been successful in getting it enabled by Notion 3. I wonder if I am doing something wrong. When I go into VST Manager, it comes up on the list, but as "not enabled". Hitting the "enable" button won't work...

I am running Notion 3.0.250 on a MacBook Pro, 10.6.3.
Cheers,
Nick

Hi Nick,
I'm running iMac with sys 10.5.7. The rest is the same. It enables/disables properly and plays. It was nifty to see the dials turn in real-time in response to dynamics.

Works:

- Garritan Personal Orchestra (Kontakt and v4 Aria)
- Garritan Steniway
- Garritan Concert & Marching Band
- Garritan Jazz and Big Band
- Garritan Strad and Gofriller sort of work (they load), but since one can't do extensive CC editing manually
or step time (i.e. without capturing a performance first) they are not useful
- RealGuitar (I've not played with it much yet, but it does load and respond correctly)
- Hauptwerk (pipe organ sampler) Loads and works, but since I can't call program changes/manually enter CC from Notion, it's not optimal
- EWQL Choirs will load, but I can't get the Word Builder to function, probably because I can't put it in the chain as a VST MIDI effect
- SIR reverb
- Reverberate and ReverberateLE

Works:

1) VIR's VI.One
2) Muse (from Sonivox) (PC only)
3) Miroslav Choir & Workstation (although only some of the instruments show up in the Notion 3 preset; others have to be accessed as if accessing non-preset VSTi's.

(P.S. I use Windows XP.)
