Notion 4 as a rewire host for Ableton live 9

Postby JBC95 » Sun May 19, 2013 8:21 pm

With previous versions of both Notion and Live, I was able to use Notion as a rewire host. I recently upgraded both programs and now Ableton Live no longer appears in the rewire section of the Mixer. Has anyone else had this problem?

[NOTE: It will be helpful to know whether you are doing digital music production on the Mac or on a Windows computer, because in this instance it makes a difference. Everything works very nicely on the Mac, and I can prove it with videos and so forth, but this is not always the case with Windows. And there are a few things that are available for Windows users but currently are not available on the Mac, where the most annoying recent examples are the new male and female virtual singers that EWQL has released, which I really want to use, but the last time I checked these virtual singers were available only for Windows users . . . ]

You probably are running Ableton Live 9 in 32-bit mode while NOTION 4 is running in 64-bit mode, or vice-versa, although there is another possibility, which is that you need to toggle the "Enable ReWire" option in NOTION 4 if the mode for Ableton Live 9 and NOTION 4 match . . .

There is another very similar topic on this, and I did a test here in the sound isolation studio on the Mac, and everything works in 32-bit mode, where I did the testing in 32-bit mode, because I used the trial version of Ableton Live 9, which is 32-bit only . . .

This is the video I made to demonstrate a 32-bit ReWire 2 session with the 32-bit versions of Ableton Live 9 and NOTION 4 on the Mac, which is fabulous . . .

Ableton Live 9 (32-bit) as ReWire host controller, NOTION 4 (32-bit) as ReWIre slave on the Mac -- QuickTime Movie -- MOV (4.5MB, approximately 1 minute and 15 seconds)

Fabulous!

This is the link to the more detailed topic on using Ableton Live 9 with NOTION 4 on the Mac--but it also has information about Ableton Live 9 and NOTION 4 for those folks who use Windows computers for their digital music production needs--and if you are doing digital music production on the Mac and are current on the operating system, which at present is Mac OS X 10.8.3 (Mountain Lion), although Mac OS X 10.8.2 (Mountain Lion) is fine, then everything works with the possible exception of there being some special case rules for NTempo, as I recall. And there are more detailed videos showing how to do 32-bit ReWire 2 on the Mac with Ableton Live 9 as ReWire 2 host controller and NOTION 4 as ReWIre 2 slave . . .

Notion 4 as Rewire Host to Ableton Live 9 - Help please? (Notion Music FORUM)

However, if you are doing digital music production on a Windows machine, then there are problems with Ableton Live 9 doing ReWIre, as explained by FORUM member elerouxx in the aforementioned topic (see link above) . . .

Lots of FUN! :)

P. S. The other possibility is that you need to toggle the "Enable ReWire" option in NOTION 4 Preferences, which is done by unchecking the option and then checking the option, which causes NOTION 4 to install the correct version of ReWire 2 for the mode (32-bit or 64-bit) in which you are running NOTION 4. And if you switch from 32-bit mode to 64-bit mode, or vice-versa, then you need to toggle the "Enable ReWire" option each time you switch modes, because 32-bit ReWire 2 only works with 32-bit applications, while 64-bit ReWire 2 only works with 64-bit applications, hence everything needs to match, and this requires using the correct version or mode of ReWire 2, which as noted is achieved by toggling the "Enable ReWire" option in NOTION 4 Preferences . . .

P. P. S. I tend to forget all the details on stuff like this when it involves an application that I do not use all the time, which in this instance is Ableton Live 9, since I use Digital Performer 8 (MOTU), Logic Pro 9 (Apple), and Reason 6.5 (Propellerhead Software) for my DAW application needs, but everything is documented in the aforementioned topic (see link above). There was something about NTempo, but without reading the topic and refreshing my memory, I do not recall at the moment exactly what the caveat was, if there was a caveat, which in some respects William Shakespeare explained in "Much Ado About Nothing" in one of Constable Dogberry's lines ("When the age is in, the wit is out") . . . :P

P. P. P. S. This is the link to the Ableton Live 9 information on 64-bit computing, really . . .
