Kontakt 3 and 4 VSTI interface won't open?

After making what I was sure were zero changes to my setup, I discovered the frustrating problem that, whenever I tried to add a VST Instruments>Kontakt 4 staff, I couldn't get at the Kontakt 4 interface. After much effort, I found the solution that I present here for anyone with experiencing the same problem:

Try making sure you have a properly functioning sound device selected in in the Audio tab of File>Preferences in Notion. Don't know why this presented problems for Kontakt 3 and 4, but not Kontakt 2, nor the Akoustik Piano and B4-II plugins. Either way, it seemed to work, so I'm happy

Hopefully this advice will save someone else the 3 hours I just wasted working this one out!
