Homage to Peter Schickele

Postby GarryM8734 » Tue Jan 03, 2012 9:40 pm

Happy 2012 everyone! Thanks to all of those who enjoyed my first upload and for their encouraging words. Here's a fugue based on a short 3/4 motif I cooked up on New Year's Day. After I had messed around with it a lot, it reminded me of the music of Peter Schickele, so I decided to score it as a tribute to him. Four instruments:

1. Notion 3 Classical Guitar - recalling his days with Joan Baez
2. GPO Bassoon - Schickele's orchestra chair
3. GIO (Instant Orchestra) Baroquestra - a nod to PDQ Bach
4. GPO Flute - No reason, because I like it!

As always, comments and suggestions are welcome.

Hi Garry.
I'm not aware of who Herr Schickele was or is, but I'm sure he would be proud of your delightful hommage.
I don't like fugues because they sound too demanding to my brain, but I enjoied this one.
From a listener point of view (of view?) I miss a little more "clarity", in the sense that sometimes I feel the performers both struggling for reaching the center of the spot and being everywhere from left to right in the sound stage, with a lack of spatiality and separation among the instruments. Pan function works very well in Notion mixer. Experiment with it. And if you feed instruments through the player own reverb you can take advantege of the SoundStage control.
I suggest also a little bit more of dynamic variations. Don't be afraid to add as many of them seamlessly along your melodic lines inserting lots of hairpins to achieve more expression. Not to mention massively tweaking note velocities. Don't worry about your score looking messy: hide every redundant expression mark.
I share your opinion about GPO bassoon (the Solo 3 patch is my favourite one) and flute.
Happy 2012 to you too.
