importing MIDI files (compatibility issues)

importing MIDI files (compatibility issues)

Postby mvanwoerkom » Wed Dec 28, 2011 12:09 pm

I am trying to import a commercial MIDI file into Notion for iPad.

Direct import crashes Notion.

I then tried the MidiSwing application on my MacBook to have a closer look at the contents of the MIDI file. It contains 16 instruments, the first having a special task as tempo track.
I saved it again as MIDI (hoping that MIDI exporter is more understandable by Notion) and tried again opening it in Notion. Another crash.

I then removed tracks until it just contained just the tempo and the electrical bass track. That version I was able to open successfully in Notion.

Today I tried another MIDI application, this time MuseScore. Here I saved as MIDI (no luck) and then as MusicXML. While the MusicXML size is enormous (7MB compared to the 50k MIDI) Notion was able to import it without crashing. However the instrument designations were lost - it is all interpreted as Piano.

Theres is another data format option - compressed MusicXML, but I have not tried it yet.

This is all rather time consuming, I couldn't do it within my time limits during working periods.
Anyone can recommend some application (Mac/Windows/iOS) which helps me to repair / sweeten / edit the MIDI?

Would it make sense to submit the file to the dev team so they can analyze what is offending Notion?

Regards,
Marc
