When I try to overdub using from the manual:
"If you want to overdub another track on top of the existing notes, press PC: SHIFT + CTRL + R"
my input gets inserted between the notes already there instead of overlaying them.
Help appreciated.

Re: Overdub
Try switching to another voice than voice 1.

Re: Overdub
I needed to use a sequencer staff:
p 14.4 of the manual
Create a SequencerStaff
Add a new staff to your score according to the steps in Add Staffs in Chapter 11. However, do not proceed
to Step Three: Close Score Setup. Instead:
1. In Score Setup, click the button for the staff you just added (or an existing staff you want to convert
to a SequencerStaff).
» The Staff Settings dialog box opens for that instrument.
2. Click the Notation/Tab tab.
» Your view changes to the properties in this third tab.
3. At the bottom, select the Sequencer Staff checkbox.
