OT. Scoring question

Postby fabiolcati » Fri Jan 08, 2010 4:21 am

Hi all.
I need an avice to write down a passage the way it looks right on paper.
So, how do I score a phrase that must be stated first at about half the pace of the rest of the tune?
a. A slower tempo marking (eg *Andante* then *Allegro*)?
b. Notes with twice value duration (and twice the bars, of course)?
Thank you.
Greetings

Sorry to butt in I couldnt find anyway to post a new topic so Ill post it here if you dont mind
Hi there
Am I being thick ? I am trying to write out a shuffle feel piece in 12/8 time but it gives me 6 quarter notes to the bar - surely it should be 4 quarter notes that you can then group in triplets

Go to *Board index*, then to *Notion*. You'll finda a red *New topic* button on the upper side of the board.
Beware of this Stendhal guy: he was a pepper pot person ;)

Can't answer on the go, 'cause I can't access N3 from here. I suggest it's a beaming issue.
Hope someone can be more helpful. Unless you can wait for 9 pm (in Italy).

And now, back to my scoring problem...

If this one situation is the only occurance of the "slower version", then I'd use double values, especially if it is in the middle of a piece.

If you want to insert a section break there (i.e. when writing variations), you can also use the slower tempo, but I'd stick with larger note values, because it is easier to read and does not force the player to find out the new tempo.

Hi Novatlan.

Going for double values seems to be the swiss-army-knife solution. :)

Altought the involved passage works as an intro to a symphonic piece (a typical *two tempo markings* situation), I'm not able to predict if it will recour again in the score. So, readability first.

Thank you

In my opinion, changing tempo is not uncommon in symphonic music. Nothing wrong with doing it. Tempo markings like "Allegro" etc. do more than just changing the beat, It most often relay a message about feeling and emotion as well. IMO it is better using those markings than changing note values.

Hi all.

Thank you for your suggestions. Readability vs. feeling is an interesting issue.

Anyway, here's some other questions for more schooled Notionists.

While trascribing Haydn' Symphony no. 100 from paper I met a lot of *dotted slur*. What do they means?

How do I need to set Horns to be G (or D, in Symphony 93) horns to notate it correctly?

Thank you.

I don't know much about the horn from that era of music or custom transposition in Notion, so someone else might be better suited for that question.

As far as the dotted slur, if I remember my college orchestration class correctly, those would be "slurred staccatos" - one of the numerous articulations and playing styles available on strings.

Check out this site if you want to hear different string techniques explained and played:

Hi pcartwright

A *slurred staccato* sounds funny to me.
Notating music looks like to be involved with Scholastic philosophy...
I solved the D Horn issue setting transposition via *notation/tab panel*. Needed some experiment to have it work it out right (same octave? lower? upper? at what view? transposed? concert? a mess :D ) but... it sounds right. I'll post about it later with screenshots, since I haven't Notion at office.
Ps Scoring Haydn is amazing! Notion plays it back greatly!
