Lack Of Free Reed Instruments..

Postby kickinstudio » Wed Jan 22, 2014 6:39 pm

Today I ran into a problem - an instrument that isn't included with Notion, and isn't offered in any expansion sets. This is likely a common problem that people encounter, but with a bit of searching online, I saw a lack of discussion and felt I should bring it up.

In the past when I don't have a certain sample that I would ideally like to have, I use a similar sounding instrument and it's fine. I have only been using Notion for about a month, so I haven't completely familiarized myself with every sample the program offers. Today for the first time I searched for a harmonica sample and found nothing. Thought to myself, maybe melodica. Nothing. Maybe chromatica. Nope. Accordion? Concertina? Harmonium? Nope, nope, and nope.

There is nothing in the category of free reed instruments, such as what I've listed above. It would be a nice addition if Notion would add those instruments in the future, or make an expansion set featuring some of these. I know I would make a purchase. Would anyone else?

And also wondering if anyone has found any working samples of these types of instruments that work well with Notion. ?

If you have Kontakt 5 (Native Instruments), then you can use the Harmonica sampled sounds from Bolder Sounds, and they are free samples, which is fabulous . . .

Harmonica (Bolder Sounds)

Harmonica Riffs (Bolder Sounds)

[NOTE: There also is a free Button Accordion that is nice . . . ]

Fabulous! :)

I suggest looking online to see if there is a free VSTi that will meet your needs. If not, there are a few VSTi's that offer the instruments that you are looking for, which is the reason we offer VSTi support.

You can do a lot with VSTi's in Notion.

There are some sample updates coming in Notion, but these instruments are not on the list at present.

The Bolder Sounds mentioned by Surfwhammy are very good. I have some of their more esoteric samples.

Another free option might be to get one of the very many Soundfont players which would give you access to a huge amount of samples in the SF format. There are millions of them out there! You can now get the SFZ+ Professional for nothing from here:

I also have the free Shortcircuit sampler which is excellent. It can load Soundfonts. I seem to recall loading up some Bolder stuff a while ago. I could be wrong. It's well worth checking out as a sampler anyway.

This good free sampler might load Kontakt or EXS24 samples, I'm not sure.

Here is a non-comprehensive list of what I see going in for the future:

Bass Flute
Oboe d'Amore
Bass Oboe
Contrabass Clarinet
Bassett Horn
Piccolo Trumpet
Cornet
Flugelhorn
Soprano Trumpet
Bass Trumpet
Alto Trombone
Wagner Tuba
Ukelele

I am not yet certain of how or when these will be made available.
