Notion + Vocaloid Prima

Postby Yves » Wed Jun 04, 2014 6:10 pm

latest Idiot savant's vocalise song, made me recall of Vocaloid Prima...

This virtual singer give incredible good results with vocalise melody.

This is a long time that I have not used it, but Idiot Savant's latest song song made me recall of it.
Vocaloid Prima can sing sentences, but it shines especially when it sing simple vocals.

Please find attached two very old compositions I made with Notion and Vocaloid (notionwas used with the vst plugin of vocaloid, but after, I rendered notion and vocaloid separately to be able to use Vocaloid 3 Superior quality for better phrasing/slured speech).

Here is a link to one of my old archived songs with a vocalise/rendition with Vocaloid Prima:

and here is the link with a singing poem from Shel Silverstein (this is an extract from a series of poem for sopranos, here in Where sidewalks ends, we have a duet of sopranos):

you would hear in this last song, that the words are quite difficult to understand... :(

I am still looking for improvment on Vocaloid for a better English speaking rendition (especially on consonnances)...

you will here in those oldest songs/mélodies that I used more classical scale, while in my latest composition I explored some more unusual Kumoi/Iwato scales with frequent disruptures of scales... here this is quite a "classical feeling" that emerge from it!

Your feedback is welcome!!
;)

Very interesting, Yves!

First of all, I like your compositions--especially "Where the Sidewalk Ends," which is very pretty.

The vocaloid quality is very good, especially if you compare it to the past, over which it seems to me to represent a rather revolutionary improvement. The human voice replication is very authentic-sounding--though there are still computer imperfections, of course, most noticeable in the "clipped" sound of some of the consonants, which almost make it sound like backward speech in some parts.

I have been growing more interested in exploring voice simulators lately. I recently heard Kurt Landre's beautiful theme "In the Garden of Faeries," which uses some kind of gorgeous female solo voice simulator:

I posted a response to Yves over in the other post, but I think it's worth sharing here. Vocaloid Prima is Windows only :( So I can't use it.

But I have heard other vocal simulators. Check out these efforts using Requiem:

Spitfire Audio has some great vocal sample libraries, but they don't quite do the same thing, as I understand it.

Michael, thanks for posting these links. I, too, work on a Mac, so it's interesting to see the Mac-friendly options for vocal simulators out there.

hi! thanks Saindufus for your feedback! :D
thank you too Michael! :D

About Requiem and other "sample based" choral, I am a bit reserved: they do good results, but they are "framing"/"limiting" too much the composition freedom toward the same kind of phrasing (always the same smooth attacks, or staccato kind, poor rendition of consonnance, and/or always the same kind of pre-definite words/sillables).

you should know me by the time... I am not the biggest fan of sampled instruments, and I prefer modern simulator/synthesizerfor their expressivity! ;) (synful/Willander/Vocaloid...!!! ;) )

On the sample side, I own EastWest Symphonic Chroirs+Choirs expansion that use "worldbuilder" to enter the text you want to sing. you can enter English words, or phonetics, and best results are made with their VOTOX, like :
"Kon(FO(T!a(TES
ma(le(dEK TES
fla(mES(Sa(KrE(mOS a(dEK TES"
(Confutatis maledictis, Flammis acribus addictis)

but, none reach the expressivity of Vocaloid Prima!
just hope for better English pronunciation...
