Gentlemen,

here the Septet no. 2, op. 3a, Impressions on a Cool Evening.
It is dedicated to Garritan's fellow Frank D'Erasmo who suggested me to write on the subject.

https://www.box.com/s/35298306acc4243e8dc6

A third one, Impressions on a Snowfall (another Frank D prompt), will follow.

I'm not that happy with the finale so... comments are welcome. As usual.

The rendering is all GPO except for the Double Bass that belongs to Notion LSO bundled library. Notion is the score-sequencer and the overall sound is provided by my now-esteemed CSR Hall Reverb preset.

Have a nice listening

I like atmosphere of composition, but for me is very long, because have very little contrasts.

Anyway, the GPO solo strings sounds better then LSO from N3 for me. But not much. Have smoother sound and atmosphere.

Sorry for little coment, i am still in learning english.

Thank you for listeining and commenting, kvapka.

You're right. I reassembled the sections at least seven times to have it accomplish my taste. And it's still too long. I will try an 8th one. And then a 9th, a 10th and so on, if necessary. Then I will re-post it.

I like it on the whole. I do think it needs a stronger contrast somewhere in the middle. I hear a natural build around 2:45 that could launch into a new direction, again at 3:20, and finally a softer moment that could transition around 3:40.

I could almost hear the piece moving towards a major tonality around 7:15 or so. That could be a place for more variety and contrast if you are so inclined.+

So, a little help if you will... is "Impressions on a Cool Evening" a variation of another theme? Or is it reflective of a literal cool evening?

It's a literal cool evening.
I will check 7.15.
Thank you for listening.

Great Job!
I realy like it... tonality, atmosphere, contrast... one realy great contemporan music!!!
I would not change the score...!!!

I realy believe that most of the comments we read above can completely be balanced by a "live" interpretation of your score.
Live playback needs to introduce some necessary amphasys and tempi variation, that are those elements that will completely "ciseled" the score and create this requested "contrast" between themes and instrument dialog...
I am not an expert of Notion 4 live tempo feature, but I would recomand you to explore it a bit to create the natural and necessary variation that would help bring into focus some particular moment of the score. Variation, should also introduce important tempi variation: listen some of your passages faster, or slower: you might first thought to loose your melody marks, but then, you will also see that the score will reveal a yet unkwown contrast, and will get this additional amphasys dimension that in some way are always a bit "castrated" when we need to "frame" the melody into the score.

Personally, I would use Sonar X2 tempo control with rewire Notion 4, to have an easy way to edit the tempo line (graphical edit).

Below is an exemple of the tempo variation I used for having a "natural" performance of the Dvorak 9th symphony demo I made with Synful and Cakewalk on which I had similar problem of leak of "contrast" (amphasys and focusing)...
as you can see I made a very extensive tempo variation!

listen to Dvorak Symphony 9 adagio to hear the corespondant MP3

Hi Yves.

Thank you for you comment. Very helpful.

I'm used to insert a lot of tempo changes in the playback version of my compositions to reach a livelike effect, almost on bar by bar basis.
I see more of it is needed, and, sure, driving it by a DAW-like tempo lane would be easier and more effective.
I'll keep on going through.

I'm happy you enjoyed the composition by itself too.

Best regards

Hi Fabiocalti,
A very nice inspirational music . I would change the strings ( not the music of the strings) with other library. No offence GPO ..but for me sounds ( not always) sometimes synthy'.
Keep posting,
Always a pleasure to listen your works,
BF

Hi Bogdan.
Nice to hear from you again.
Thank you for your comment.
And, yes, I'm looking for adding VSL to my rig to have a better sounding strings.
Regards

I enjoyed your piece.
I agree with Bogdan on the GPO strings sound.
