Lo scampato pericolo

Dear friends,

I wish to share with you one more musical effort, before leaving for summer holidays.

http://www.box.net/shared/sohugoscvs

One year ago my brother-in-law Bruno suffered of severe disease, mostly due to his immoderate lifestyle.
He asked me to write a piece celebrating his recovery.
"Lo scampato pericolo" means "The lucky escape" for the few who don't speak italian.
Since Bruno loves the sound of timpani, I put no kettledrums until the solo passage of him feeling scared to death before his awakening in intensive care unit. Then they tacet again up to the finale.
I must say that he is now back to his bad habits, avoiding physician' advices.

The piece took form In the flavour of an early XIX century opera overture and echoes some Haydn and Rossini.

I apologize for inappropriate reverb settings. I share same Jos Wylin experience here.

Also, I will fix expressive tangles and some melodic issues. Not before having some swim :D

Comments are welcome.

A little complaint on oboe and clarinet: since latest N3 builds it seems they lost timbral consistency across range and dynamics. Has anyone else noticed about this?

Greetings

-- Edit: I updated score and mix, with a better sounding reverb setting.

Yes. Aside from flute which is a cheap YellowTools woodwind. (Notion' is awful to me: close to be a clarinet)
It plays back without sequencer staff controls since it is not scored to have much expressive changes.
I maintained Notion' flute on his own staff for trills (turning YT's velocity to 0, thanks to pcartwright for suggesting this workaround for non-working GPO tecniques).
Instead, bundled piccolo is now n. 1 of my playlist.

Thank you for listening and comment.

Thanks for sharing your work, I thoroughly enjoyed it ! I am a NEWBY to composing with NOTION, right now I am using NOTION SLE with Miroslav Philharmonic, and it is exciting to hear what can be done ! I mostly create music for ballet and Modern dance and may yet get up the courage to share one of my own. Thanks Again !

Hi mrmark.
Thank you for listening.
This is the second score I completed in my life (well, maybe the third...).
Though I'm happy that such a little thing will work as an encouragement for you,
I must warn you to be careful: look for a better guide than me! :)
Have a nice day.

well in the spirit of creativity... I will share my first attempt on this program.

Try this link. https://files.me.com/singamajig/m7lgfo.mp3

It is a rough mix still things to fix. I am still struggling with dynamic markings. Sometimes the instruments are way louder than i want and too quiet even though I have clearly indicated the levels on the score.

This is a piece for a short modern dance yet to be titled.

Any feedback is welcome.
Thanks Mark

Hi there Mark,

I agree the velocity levels need tweaking. Are these N3 sounds and Miroslav sounds?

I esp. like the mood of the piece from about 1:00 to 1:40.

Cheers,
Jon
P.S. Maybe start your own thread for this?

Very glad to see I'm not the only one who seems to have never quite made it out of the 19th century! I can see the Haydn and Rossini. I did find myself wondering for almost the first half, So, where's the severe disease?, but then that answered itself. It's good to see that somebody can still craft some decent music as was done before atonality ruined so much of the 20th century. (Now you see where my tastes are!) I like it!

Second score? Hmm... That means there's a first one out there somewhere...

Hi Granwque.
Thank you for listening to Lo scampato pericolo.
I'm happy liked it and for having spent your time to comment it.
You see, it's only a divertissment, or, to stay with Rossini, a pechee de veillesse.

Well, there's not actually another score (apart from a totally different approach I took at the beginning that lies in my desktop. You will have to wait until my postumous opus will be published before you'll hear it. Unless I will fit it in the next thing I'm called to score in half an hour :) ), I just found a way to make it sound better than the first time I shared it.
Arrivederci
