Overfilling measure

I have a 4/4 measure. If I insert 3 quarter notes, and a half note, they all go in one measure. I would expect that the half would have been broken down, with a quarter in the first measure, tied to a quarter in the next measure. Is this a setting that I'm missing, or is this the way the program is supposed to work?
I am entering with a stylus, from the piano keyboard.
