about to buy ipad...

about to buy ipad...

Postby cr3ator84 » Fri Dec 07, 2012 5:12 am

ok guys, i've decided to screw it and just buy an ipad (purely for notion)

just 1 question though....

i have notion 4. are the instruments exactly the same for the ipad as they are for the desktop version (including expansion sounds)

so if i create a piece in the desktop version with all the expansion sounds, expressions and instrument effects are they exactly reproducible on the ipad version and vice-versa?

godspeed

Hi cr3ator84,

You seem to adjust your purchasing habits just like I did: No need for an iPad except for the Notion app. (You'll find out afterwords how handy it is for other things as well! How did I ever live without one?)

My impression is that the samples probably use the same source material as those for the desktop, and that they generally sound the same. Sometimes I find that I have to adjust the volume level of one or more tracks when I listen to a desktop-created file on the iPad, but I can't tell if that's because of the different headphones I use. The iPad app is in so many ways a small subset of the desktop program, and it will be a while, I think, before the tablet version becomes as capable as its big brother, but add far as instrument sounds the two are very nearly identical.

If you buy the whole expansion package for the iPad app, you'll have the same set of sounds as you do when you buy the whole desktop expansion package.

One more thing: Don't go for an iPad 2, even though they are more affordable now. I don't think it is powerful enough to run the Notion app: Playback stutters if you have more than a dozen instruments or so. I don't know how capable the iPad Mini is, but Notion is very zippy and much better at playback on my new iPad 4, which has twice as much RAM as the iPad 2 and can play considerably more simultaneous noises because of it.

Best wishes,
Thorrild

Hey thorrild,

Thanks so much for this! My main concern was whether they had exactly the same set of sounds on each :)

I guess the iPad app will serve as a tool for quickly fleshing out ideas where they will be taken home and enhanced by the bigger brother!

I'm actually really looking forward to using the ipad for sight-reading sheet music too!

And yes, good shout, I will be going for an iPad 4 :)

thanks again
take care
