New user confused about transposing tool...

Postby deanesque » Thu May 27, 2010 11:32 pm

I can't get transpose to work properly. The manual states:

"To transpose a particular section of your score, highlight a passage (or click-select specific notes)."

Then ...

"Either:
––Go to the Menu bar and select Tools > Transpose, or
––Right-click and select Tools > Transpose in the context menu.
» The Transpose dialog box opens."

Up to here it works fine but it will not transpose bu simply highlighting a section (or Ctrl-A). It will only transpose if I individually click on each note that I want transposed. Surely I'm missing something. You can't possibly have to click on every note individually to transpose!!!

Help appreciated.

The Transpose command works fine for me, on a single note as well as on a highlighted passage of any size.

Are you by any chance trying to transpose by an octave? The Transpose window has an odd quirk: After you select Octave in the interval list, you also have to change the drop-down menu on the right side from "Same octave" to "One octave" in order to produce the desired result.

I've never figured out why it's designed this way. I hereby invite Kyle or someone else at Notion to explain the logic behind it.

Best wishes,

My understanding of how this is designed is that you select "Same Octave" if you want to transpose a specific interval within the octave of your original notes. The option for 1, 2, 3, etc... is if you want to transpose that same interval MORE than one octave.

Dean-
This function works really well for me! Instead of selecting your material by pressing ctrl+a use the mouse to select the parts you'd like to transpose then use the right click>tools>transpose method. If this doesn't work don't hesitate to give Brian in tech support a call.....

Thanks for the replies. I think I figured it out. I was transposing a percussion line. Pitched instruments seem to work fine but percussion lines seem to require individually selecting each note for transposition. Is the by design? When I import my percussion files via MIDI from Sibelius they seem to be about 3 octaves too low. If this is how it is supposed to work it will take a lot of work to import these files. I know that un-pitched percussion is a bit different from pitched instruments but it seems logical that if you can select individually to transpose that you should be able to group select as well. Perhaps there is a reason for this?
