problem with the tonal range of instruments

hi again,

here's a second thing I can't solve, I'm open for all advice:

"violins" e.g. as a notion-soundset refuses writing notes below A2, the miro-violins refuse writing notes below C3. later I can drag notes downwards, but for the first writing there seems to be a kinda tonal barrier. what am I doing wrong?

thanks in advance

Hi wolf!
What kind of input technic do you use?
I tried here with Notion violins and with Miro violins and I have no problems writing them below A2 and C3 using: Step input (with keyboard), live recording (keyb) but when I use mouse to insert them the symbol goes dimmed grey and I'm unable to insert them as you said, I also have to drag them down.
However when I allready have one note written below G3 I can go on and write with the mouse below G3....strange, it's like the "insert" area has expanded when there allready is one low note inserted.

I would say this is a bug.

hi ulrik,

thanks for the confirmation that the strange behaviour with these "greyed out notes" is the same at your site. btw...I use as an input source the mouse.

dear notion team, it would be cool if this would be solved. thanks!

Basically the height of each part will only allow notes to be inserted by mouse within a certain range. The height and range of a part is increased when there are notes of extreme enough ranges already present. If you think about it you can't expect to be able to input by mouse the highest note playable on the piano because that would mean the piano part would have to be very high (which would be a waste of space for almost everyone). What I have suggested before, though, is that Notion should make it so that when you have a note prepared as the cursor (ready to place in the score) and you move it up it should push a little into the above part's lower range before snapping to the above part when it is almost of top of its bottom line. Similarly, once it has snapped to the above part, as you drag the cursor down the point at which it snaps to the below part should be stretched. This would mean people would not have to place a note then move it up or down to the extreme pitch they wanted to place it at as much.

Another possible idea to deal with this could be, to enable dragging of notes until the Left Mouse Button (LMB) is released:

-Currently a note is committed to the score on the LMB click. You then have to press escape to drag the note that you have just written. It could be that until the LMB is released it is possible to drag the note to a new position . i.e. in this case to the extremes of a register.

-Alternatively a modifier could be used for a similar thing. Press Alt and the cursor will go to an arrow, you can drag the note; Release Alt and the cursor returns to crotchet (or whatever note was selected before).

Alt becomes a temporary escape. ( I can see other uses for Alt as a temp escape also, time for a separate FR I think :) )

thanks for that hint! so my makeshift is now to put a dynamics mark at the beginning of each track...that expands the height downwards.
anyway, fixing that problem would be better.

your proposals make sense, mr. unfinished and mr. 4tune.

Another way to get to extreme ranges is to put in a note, and then move it way down, allowing subsequent notes to be entered. I put in a note, then use the arrow key to move it down. I agree it would be nice to drag while entering.
