Jazz Font not working for me

Hi, again...

Seems that my intro to Notion is not going smoothly.

N3 or N4 on Windows 8.1.

I can't get either version to see the Jazz Font. Jazz templates open with boxes and other useless symbols instead of clefs and notes.

Every other program that I have that uses the Jazz Font sees it perfectly fine. Only in Notion can I not make it work.

I looked on the forum, and the amazing Surfwhammy responded to issues related to Macs, but I'm using Windoze 8.1. Further searching didn't yield results.

So, Surf, (if I may address you by your first name instead of Mr. Whammy :D ) where do I turn for help in making the jazz font be seen in Notion?

Finale sees it. Sibelius sees it. Overture sees it. MuseScore sees it....

"Surf" is fine with me!
:)

There might be a problem with the way NOTION 4 tries to find the "Jazz" fonts in Windows 8.1, but the best strategy is to call Notion Music customer service and ask for help . . .

As best as I can determine, the Jazz font that comes with NOTION 4 probably is different, since there are many "Jazz" style fonts. In other words, it is possible that the "Jazz" style fonts that work nicely with Finale, Sibelius, Overture, and MuseScore simply are different fonts from different typeface families, where for reference a "font" is a specific instance of a "typeface family", with for example "Times Roman" being a typeface family but "12 point Italic Times Roman" being a font and "12 point Bold Times Roman" being another font . . .

I see that you tried opening scores that use Jazz fonts and that it did not work, but for NOTION 4 I only find one factory supplied score that uses the NOTION 4 Jazz fonts, and none of the NOTION 4 demo scores uses it; so you might want to try creating a new score from the "08 Jazz Combo" template . . .

[NOTE: Considering that you have NOTION 3 on your Windows 8.1 computer, you probably are referring to opening your own NOTION 3 scores that use the NOTION 3 Jazz font. I think this is different than running NOTION 4 and creating a new template using the "08 Jazz Combo" template. There are differences in the NOTION 3 project file format and the NOTION 4 project file format, but this might be more the case with NOTION 4 scores created with the 64-bit version of NOTION 4. The native NOTION 4 sounds are different from the native NOTION 3 sounds . . . ]

Another possibility is that the specific choice of printer in NOTION 4 "Page Setup" might have an affect, so another experiment involves trying a different printer for NOTION 4 "Page Setup" . . .

THOUGHTS

This is all that comes to mind at present, and since I do everything on the Mac there is not much I can do with respect to troubleshooting font problems in the Windows universe, but there are folks who use NOTION 4 productively on Windows computers, so perhaps one of them will have a bit of advice . . .

There were problems with the NOTION Jazz font on the Mac for a while, but it was corrected a long time ago, as I recall . . .

I am reluctant to suggest the following experiment, since I do not know how reinstalling NOTION 3 and NOTION 4 affects the licensing software on a Windows computer, but it is an intriguing hypothesis . . .

Specifically, since you have both NOTION 3 and NOTION 4 installed on your Windows 8.1 computer, and since both NOTION 3 and NOTION 4 have a Jazz font, it is possible that the Jazz fonts are different and NOTION 4 was not able to update the NOTION 3 Jazz font with the newer NOTION 4 Jazz font . . .

I have NOTION 3 and NOTION 4 installed on the Mac Pro here in the sound isolation studio, and what happens is that the specific native NOTION sounds in the path specified in NOTION 4 are the ones that are used for NOTION 3, even though NOTION 3 actually has a different set of native NOTION sounds, so if I am using NOTION 3 and want to use the NOTION 3 sounds, I need to start by running NOTION 4 and then pointing it to the folder where the NOTION 3 sounds are located, because otherwise if NOTION 4 is pointing to the NOTION 4 sounds, NOTION 3 will use the NOTION 4 sounds rather than the NOTION 3 sounds . . .

Something similar might happen with the NOTION 3 Jazz font and the NOTION 4 Jazz font, but since I do not know what might happen if you this experiment, I think it is best to call Notion Music customer service (a.k.a., "technical support") and let them help you find a solution . . .

IDEA

If you have not installed the 64-bit version of NOTION 4, then try installing it . . .

Conversely, if you have not installed the 32-bit version of NOTION 4, then try installing it . . .

On Windows computers, there are two separate installs for NOTION 4, where one installs the 32-bit version of NOTION 4, while the other installs the 64-bit version of NOTION 4. The two versions are installed to different folders or directories . . .

In contrast, on the Mac there is a single "package" that has a "Universal Binary" which has both versions, and switching from one to the other is just a matter of checking or unchecking the "Open in 32-bit mode" option for the single NOTION 4 application . . .

Lots of FUN! :)

OK...this is odd.

Nothing I do can make the Jazz Font templates/scores to DISPLAY on my Windows 8.1 machine.

PRINTING, however, WORKS FINE to my LaserJet 5000 AND to my Dell color lasers.

BUT: Everything using Jazz Font displays and prints fine on other programs that use it.

@Surfwhammy...tried pretty much everything you discussed. Nothing will make it DISPLAY...all I get are the bounding rectangles...at least they look like bounding rectangles...maybe they're upper positions in the font map. Dunno.

Different view percentages, which can be an issue in some cases, is not in play here. Any percent view has the same problem.

Only thing I haven't tried is to put 32-bit N4 on the computer, because the font didn't display in N3 either.

I won't rule out a display driver issue, but if it were such an issue, I'd be seeing it on other programs. I don't see it for ANY font on ANY program on my system, music or otherwise. ONLY Jazz font on Notion.

And while we're at it...in the Big Band template, why do parts default to "standard" notation when the score is set to Jazz Font?

Any other Windoze 8.1 users out there? A call to support may be in order today, That will be better than grading finance final exams.

I think you need to call Notion Music customer support on this one . . .

Yep.
