All notes don't sound on playback with VST

I noticed yesterday when I run a VST with ASIO - I'm using TruePianos, to directly input midi via my keyboard controller that when recording the notes all play, however, on playback I get some notes that don't sound at all. It seems that if two midi notes are played as a chord very close together on the staffs, that some notes drop off on playback - as if they weren't recorded at all.

Does anyone know why this is happening? I know there have been other threads complaining about midi input, but that was some time ago, and I'm wondering if the developers are still aware of this and trying to fix it.

When using the built in sounds it works much better. Are there some things I can try to do to get playback to sound as I recorded it?

This is very disappointing. :(

Hi digitaleagle,

No we aren't aware of any such issue, in-fact all of our VST's in testing work just fine and playback exactly what we recorded. Could you attach a score maybe, or send it to tech support so we can have a look. I suspect this is something more specific to your situation.

Thanks

Here's a little more information. When I play two hands, (from piano midi keyboard) with a set of chords - each on a 1/4 note beat - notes get dropped off on playback using an external VST - True Pianos. (I haven't tried it with other vst's I own yet. The notes show up on the score but they don't play back properly. On performance there is no lag or notes dropping off when played - only on playback. When I play the same thing with the piano sound that comes with Notion it plays ok. I will see if I can isolate this down further and yes - I will send a score to you via the support function. I don't get this behavior with any other software I own. Reason 4, Sonar, Project 5, Sibelius, etc.

BTW - can you switch instruments once you set it on the score? (Say from the Notion piano to a different VST?) I can't seem to figure out how to do this. Every time I click on the part and try to change the instrument it adds another part to the score with that instrument.

Further info. I also sent in a support request. I tried another vst I own, Lounge Lizzard by AAS. Once again recording went fine. I could hear the sounds as I played them and the notes were written on the staffs correctly. This time, there was no output at all on playback.

Once again, the instruments that come with Notion work fine. These vst's work fine on my other hosts.

This is very frustrating. Could there be some kind of bug in the VST handler?

Let me know if anyone has any suggestions.

Hi digitaleagle, hi Lubo,

I have the same problem with Truepianos VST in Notion.

I wonder if this could be a Truepianos issue. :?:

Yes - I reported to tech support that this seems to be VST specific. I even thought this might be a problem with just chords, but when sequential single notes are played - they also drop out randomly upon playback.

I have an even bigger problem with AAS Lounge Lizzard. It plays fine during recording and lays the notes out on the staff but the sound output stops after the first measure all together.

I tried Dimension Pro and Wusikstation and both of those VST's work just fine.

So - it seems that there are some conflicts with Notion 3 with specific VST's like TruePianos. Now I'm curious to try my other vst's to see if this is just isolated to those two.

I asked Brian at Notion if he could contact 4Front and see if they can figure out why their VST is acting this way with the Notion 3 code. I'd like to use that VST when composing.

Thanks for the update and confirming you are having the same issue with TruePianos. This is positive as I was thinking Notion might have a more serious problem here.

Thanks guys,

We'll have to look into those VSTi's since it seems like its a specific issue...

Hey there,

I have the same problem with Ivory and also with the Steinway coming with EWSO Platinum. For the latter I setup a track with the help of that palette thingy and used your EWSO presets.

Are there any news yet?

Best,
Stephan

Forgot to say...Play is included via Jbridge. But I guess that doesn't make a difference since jBridge is just a wrapper/proxy.

I seem to have a similar problem with several VSTs. The one that seems tp be affected worst is Quantum Leap Ministry of Rock, which often misses notes out on playback (including as exported audio.)
