I don't know about anyone else, but I'm regularly deleting my metronome symbol in the first measure, and also my dynamics and custom instrument (Shift-I) markings, simply trying to select notes on their own!
I know I must be missing something. I've tried narrowing a selection by going to "Clear Special...", but it seems that just "notes" isn't an option?

A way to just select notes/rests only?

Re: A way to just select notes/rests only?
I bet if you add another staff to the score , then when you select the measure it wont erase.
Tempo marks are part of the "global" settings of a score and they only delete when all staffs are selected. But if you only have one staff, when you select a measure you are selecting all staffs and your tempo is removed as you hit delete.
Hope this helps.

Maybe score elements could be marked as "fixed" in a future version so they cannot accicdentally be deleted.

Aha, you're right! Still seems quite an unusual approach.
I quite like Novatlan's suggestions for things to be 'anchored' against unintended deletion.
I'm pretty sure that in a Piano piece, you would end up deleting the metronome and dynamics all the time.
I really am missing a way to just select notes on a stave on their own.

Yep, that would be a cool feature.
Actually, I just realized - you don't have to add a staff to the score. The tempo also wont be removed if you just select the top staff of the piano. It will only go away if you select both staffs AND the piano is the only staff on the page.
Sorry for the confusion...
