How Do I Match The Key Signatures Of A Printed Score

Postby DaddyO » Fri Jan 04, 2013 1:47 pm

Below is a screenshot of the first page of a published full orchestra score of Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake Suite, Op. 20a available on IMSLP. Of particular note for this post are the key signatures for instruments where the written notes and the sounding notes are different, in this score the Clarinets, the Horns, and the Trumpets.

I want to create a Notion 4 score of this work showing the same key signatures as shown in the published score and sounding correctly. This will make it much easier to enter the score in Notion: simply duplicate in Notion what appears on the published score.

I am aware of the three View Options, Transposed, Concert Tuning, and Concert Pitch. I am aware of the Staff Settings where the sounding pitch of instruments can be modified. I am aware of the tool for changing Clefs. And I am aware of the dialoge box for inserting a Key Signature, which allows you to specify a key and a mode along with providing check-boxes for Concert Key and Enter In All Parts.

Despite playing around with it quite a bit I have not been able to find a combination that allows me to do what I want. The more I try the more confused I get. I don’t know if this is because it’s impossible or because I’m missing something. I figure it’s probably the latter.

If anyone can walk me through how to set things up to look like the published score (with regard to key signature and notation) and sound the correct pitches I would really appreciate it.

I think you just want to essentially enter your notes in transposed mode. It will display in the transposed key but still sound concert pitch.

Right, you would think so, but try it using the above score and the Full Orchestra template showing only the appropriate instruments. You will not get that. At least I did not.

Is there one staff that gives you more trouble than others?

Thanks pcartwright, I'll reply next week. We're moving this weekend.
