Notion 4 + Reason 6.5

Hello,

I actually have the Miroslav Orchestra Refills for Reason and wanted to know how to Set up Notion 4 as the Master and have Reason 6.5 set up as a slave utilizing the reason sounds in the Notion score. I also wanted to understand how much control the Notion dynamic markings had over the Reason sounds in Slave mode. Thanks.

Regards,

Patrick

Hi, i have N3 and sometimes use rewire with Reason 4, and i think it will work on N4 and R6.5. In Notion program, open mix and select + on rewire > Reason > Ch1-2. Then open Reason and in Notion create midi staf. If you create intrument in Reason, set up midi control in reason. In basic, Notion control only dynamics and stacatos, some tremolo technique. If you want use crescendos and decrescendos on long notes for violin for example, you must write your own custom rules.

When you say 'set up a midi control in Reason' what do you mean? Can I get a step by step setup for using Reason 6.5 as a slave with Notion 4? I saw the tutorial where Logic 9 (that I also own) is incorporated into the mix....is another DAW necessary to link these different programs via rewire or can Notion 4 and Reason work together exclusively...if so...how? I guess what I am missing is the handshake between the notation entered in Notion and how it triggers the sound in Reason.

Thanks.

Patrick

Sorry for my english. I forgot write Rewire for using Notiono with Reason you need midi virtual cable/driver. I use midiLoopBe1. http://nerds.de/en/loopbe1.html

After install virtual midi cable
Setup is:
1. Open Notion
3. in Notion open File > Preferences > Midi and set up as in picture Nmidi in attachment.
4. Open Notion mixer panel (in mixer is on top panel rewire button with small plus icon) click on rewire plus icon and select Reason > Ch1-2 (picture Nmixer in attachment)
5. Open Reason
6. Edit > Preferences and set up as in picture Rsetup in attachment.

This points is for, if you want notate Reason Machines (synths, drums, samplers):
7. In notion create midi staff - go to Score Edit > External Midi > Midi Port A > channel 1
8. On top of rack section is rack for audio and midi data. I dont know how it looks in R6.5 select ADV. MIDI DEVICE and in chanells select instrument. See picture Rmidi

hope this help.

Voila!

This solved the problem I was having on the Mac, which is fabulous . . .

Fabulous! :D

P. S. I have been trying to get this working on the Mac for a long time, but it never worked. Seeing the various screen captures for Windows helped a lot, and after a bit of experimenting I got it working on the Mac, for sure . . .

For sure! :ugeek:

Thanks Kvapka,

Can anyone recommend a good virtual midi cable for mac....I am seeing plenty of them for windows? I actually went into utilities/audiomidi setup / show midi window and set up the A, B, C, and D Ports in the IAC Driver properties box. This worked like the midiloopB1 does in windows. I could actually get reason to be a sound source in slave mode for Notion but the reason sound was distorted and failed to playback the notation I entered in Notion. I think we are almost there. Can anyone explain why the signal is distorting and how I can get the playback to happen correctly? Thanks.

I did a set of posts on how to do this on the Mac, and it might provide some clues . . .

Regarding virtual MIDI cables for the Mac, this is what IAC Driver does, as you discovered . . .

For sound quality, it is important to use standard CD audio for Reason 6.5, since this is what NOTION 4 uses (44.1-kHz at 16-bits) . . .

If you try to use a higher resolution, it will sound worse rather than better, so this might be part of the problem . . .

Also, you need to be careful in the way you set volume levels and so forth in the Reason 6.5 Mixer . . .

If the various instrument samples sound good when you are using Reason 6.5 by itself, then they should sound just as good when NOTION 4 is the ReWire host controller and Reason 6.5 is the ReWire slave . . .

This is all that comes to mind at the moment . . . :D
