Some questions about N3 and EWQL?

Just got NOTION 3 today. Couple of questions:
1. I loaded up Notion 3 trumpet, wrote a couple of bars including dynamics but hairpins are not being read. Starts p ignores the hairpin then plays loudly at ff. I then created EWQL Play trumpet, used the same music and same thing happened. I did the same thing as on the video tutorial so can't understand what I'm doing wrong.
2. Wrote a flute part first for NOTION 3 sound then for EWQL Play. Same thing, played all the staccatos etc but ignored hairpin. Additionally, EWQL ignored the fluttertongue marking.
3. Am I right in saying that for crescendos on sustained notes we need to set up a separate xfade patch for this and write in modulation data? I thought that NOTION would recognize the hairpin and use a xfade patch automatically?
4. Do you need a keyboard with mod wheel to input data on sequence staff or can you draw it with the mouse?
