Midi export

Postby achambily » Wed Dec 22, 2010 8:13 am

Can you precise the structure of the midi files exported by Notion ?
What way are exported the VSTs articulations ?
Notion, Cubase 7, EWQLSO Gold, VSL SE
Win7 x64, I7 Dell studio laptop, 8GB RAM
M-Audio FTP
M-Audio KeyStudio 25
Clavinova CLP 811
Sennheiser e840
Sennheiser HD280 Pro
Yamaha HS50M

I made a few tests and the results are strange...
I was using EWQL and a lite patch.
1. most of the keyswitches are repeated each quarter note... why ? we need just a keyswitch to change articulation ?
2. some keyswitches are not exported (pizz and arco for celli, for instance)

I tried also a full patch, but in this case, it is impossible to retrieve the articulations mapping : you get notes on different midi channels, but you don't know which midi channel matches which articulation...

So, what is the best way if you want to export to a DAW for mixing purposes ?

Didn't want to start a new topic but I think my comment will fit well.
What makes me continously mad is the MIDI export. It's just not correct. Loaded up an Image as an example. In a DAW this sounds horrible although I have a nice guitar pluging. But with this MIDI-File..no way and I am absolutely not willing to edit every single note. Image

That is pretty weird. Does it sound OK in Notion?

I think what you are seeing in your DAW makes sense.

Looking at point 1:
Each note gets reviewed for applicable playback rules. So, for example, if you have a rule that says "if violin con sordino, then keyswitch C2" then you will get the C2 keyswitch each time a note for muted violin is played. If you have a rule that sets a keyswitch when to normal, then every "normal" note will have that keyswitch.

Point 2:
I'm not entirely sure about this, but it may be that instead of keyswitches, the rules relate to channel changes. If channel changes are in the rules (such as for full patch), the articulations are shown on the VSTi window (ctrl + i). Simply use the same settings in your DAW to replicate the patches used in Notion.

Yes. In Notion everything is fine. But the generated MIDI from Notion isn't usable :(. Tried the export with "let ring" and without "let ring" no change.

I gave up on Notions's MIDI export ages ago. Export MusicXML however works fine. Looks like that's not really any help to you though :(

that's the reason why we all need a true pianoroll...
