Ladies/Gents:

I have a consistent problem with notes which are tied over a bar line re-articulating randomly. For example: I will write some brass sustaining a soft chord for like 4 or 5 measures at a slower tempo. The instruments will randomly re-attack (towards the end of the chord usually but not always). This of course ruins the effect. This happens often in tandem with fermatas which seem to also play back kinda funky. I know brass instruments must breathe (I play tuba, i know it more than any). However, this should not affect playback. We can stagger breath after all.

Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

The samples are based on true playback from the LSO players, so if you find a passage that you (as a brass section) would stagger breathing you may want to do that with the composition to make the playback sound accurate.....

I understand the methods used for sampling in programs like Notion and this was my immediate assumption. But after messing around with it I'm not so sure. For one thing, I'm no Patrick Harrild, but I can sustain the same notes on my tuba for much much longer without taking a breath. Also, it's very random and happens differently on different tracks ,often in tandem with a fermata (could it be the fermatas I'm screwing up?). For instance, If I have the trombones sustaining a pedal, the third tbn will re-articlulate, but not the first tbn part and then, it might immediately re-articulate again. Also, i noticed it doing the same thing in non-wind instruments; same M.O. though.

any other thoughts?

I agree 100% that *any* wind player sustain a note for more than 5-6 seconds, especially at softer volumes!

What I find interesting is that all Notion 2 wind sounds were looped, while Notion 3 are not, including the new Jazz Kit. Is that stereo, 24-bit samples are harder to loop? No, that can't be it because the N3 strings are looped, and strings are notoriously tricky when it comes to looping.

So why the change, which we will have to live with because rumor has it that eventually we will no longer be able use N2 instruments in some yet-to-come release.

Can anyone help us to understand this change that actually makes sense?

Just wanted to add an additional thought that notating long, tied notes is very common in scores and that it is left up to the player and/or conductor where the player with take a breath.

Therefore, why should N3 saddle us with having to make/notate such performative decisions?
