I did some experiments with the 64-bit version of Ableton Live 9 for the Mac, and while it functions correctly as a ReWire 2 slave, it does not allow using Audio Unit (AU) and VSTi virtual instruments when running as a ReWire 2 slave, as explained in the following excerpt from the Ableton Live 9 knowledge base:
Before starting, please note that when Live is running as a ReWire slave:- No VST or AU plugins are available.
- It is not possible to use MIDI controllers as native Control Surfaces in Live.
- No physical audio inputs/outputs are available in Live. The ReWire master application is handling the audio interface and the ins/outs. External material can be recorded with the master application only.
- No MIDI outputs are available either. Use the master application to send MIDI notes to your external synthesizers.

Hence, while Ableton Live 9 (32-bit and 64-bit) acts as a ReWire 2 host controller and supports using both AU and VSTi virtual instruments, it does not allow using AU and VSTi virtual instruments when running as a ReWire 2 slave, and this essentially makes it the same as Digital Performer 8 (MOTU) and Logic Pro 9 (Apple) with respect to working nicely as a ReWire 2 host controller where NOTION 4 is the ReWire 2 slave but of no value in the particular scenario you described, since as I understand the scenario you specifically need to use a DAW application to play Vienna Symphonic Library (VSL) instruments via MIDI notes and commands recorded in the DAW application rather than being sent from NOTION 4 External MIDI staves . . .
This puts us back at the beginning with no solution, since these three DIgital Audio Workstation (DAW) applications are the ones I am comfortable recommending for use on the Mac when doing ReWire 2, since (a) I have tested them in both 32-bit and 64-bit modes and (b) they work nicely as well-behaved ReWire 2 host controllers in Mac OS X 10.8.4 (Mountain Lion) . . .
So, this is big question here in the sound isolation studio:
QUESTION: Why do you need NOTION 4 to be the ReWire 2 host controller rather than being a ReWire 2 slave to one of these DAW applications?
As noted, the only reason that comes to mind involves needing specifically to use NOTION 4 conducting and performing features, but I think that you can do this reasonably well with one of the aforementioned DAW applications, although probably not so elegantly as the way NOTION does it . . .
Lots of FUN!
