News from notion

Postby TOSCANINI » Fri Dec 02, 2011 12:20 am

It seem's that an ipad version of notion coming soon. And it's a Very good news and also a not so very good one.

Very good because some of us (like me) waiting for it. Have the possibility to work with notion from the ipad. I think that it's must place notion above of other notation programs and bring a new audience.

Not very good because we also wait so much time for the big update we really need. Notion 3 was great, but we are waiting for the next level... 64 bit, new vst like symphobia 1 and 2, vsl download instrument, kontakt 4/5..., timecode and video suport.

I hope we also have good news soon for this update.

I know this topic may disapointing the notion team wo work so hard for us, but i'm afraid that announcement of ipad version disapointing lot of people here waiting for this update.

We also need news for the notion 3 program we love so much and hope so much for the next level of excellence.

On the good side, some of the work done on the iPad version might apply to a new Mac OS X version, since there are commonalities among iOS and Mac OS X, and having a larger customer base provides more revenue for doing software development on NOTION 4, but the reality here in the sound isolation studio is that NOTION 3 maxes very quickly on the 2.8-GHz 8-core Mac Pro, primarily because it is a 32-bit application, and I doubt that an iPad version of NOTION will be able to do much of anything with third-party VSTi instruments and VST effects plug-ins, because to the best of my knowledge there are none that run on the iPad, and even if there were any, the ones I would like probably would cause my iPad2 to burst into flames before the end of the second measure . . .

[NOTE: IK Multimedia has an iPad version of AmpliTube and a few other products, but the idea of running AmpliTube, VocaLive, and NOTION for the iPad simultaneously appears to be a vast waste of otherwise useful time, although there might be a bit of merit to running VocaLive in a very specific scenario, where the idea is to have a way to "ballpark" vocal effects without requiring the DAW application to do any work other than simply recording the iPad2 generated audio, since an iPad should be able to handle this and to do a reasonable amount of special effects work in a timely way without causing latency problems, although I will not be convinced until I do some experiments, which of course will not happen until I decide to purchase an iRig Mic and VocaLive for the iPad, which currently is not on the list of things I need to do anytime soon. There might be a scenario where running NOTION on an iPad makes sense, but none comes to mind for anything I need to do at present . . . ]

iPad Apps and Accessories (IK Multimedia)

In other words, the view here in the sound isolation studio is that an iPad version of NOTION is about as useful as a pair of electric socks when one lives in the desert, but if it generates a significant revenue stream for Notion Music that makes it possible to start focusing on NOTION 4, then I am all for it, so long as the fascination with children's toys fades and everyone gets back to doing grown-up work, really . . .

Really! :o

I am quite happy with NOTION 3, and I can wait a while for NOTION 4, but sooner or later NOTION needs to be a 64-bit application with full support for multicore processing, which on the Mac maps to being able to assign tasks to multiple cores when they are present and available for use, or at least to do something that makes it possible for all the stuff (NOTION, DAW application, Reason, VSTi virtual instruments, and VST effects plug-ins) to use the full processing power of a Mac Pro, which might map to VST plug-ins having their own separate workspaces, if this can be done in a way that does not cause synchronizing and timing problems, which might not be possible, although there nearly always is a way to do advanced stuff . . .

There are some additional capabilities I would like to have to make composing more efficient, such as the abilities (a) to select custom-defined musical phrases from a local SQL database and (b) to generate custom-defined musical phrases based on mathematical and geometric formulas, but they are listed in the topic I started a few months ago on "NOTION 4: Vision for the Future" in this FORUM . . .

NOTION 4: Vision for the Future (Notion Music FORUM)

I have a nice set of verified "workarounds" for all the 32-bit application workspace limitations, and I am fine with the reality of waiting for a while, but I also look forward to a 64-bit version with full multicore functionality sometime in the not so distant future, really . . .

Really! :ugeek:

P. S. The Digital Musician's Prayer . . .

Dear God:

Please tell me that there is not going to be an iPod shuffle version of NOTION!

Amen
