Vamp - I don't understand this term

Postby Raymond Robijns » Tue Mar 16, 2010 12:46 pm

What is a vamp (apart from the word often used in movies to picture a gorgeous and dangerous woman).

Please use simple words (language barrier and who knows other barriers too.....haha)

Raymond,
This is from the Norton/Grove Concise Encyclopedia of Music:

Vamp. A verb meaning to extemporize the simple accompaniment to a vocal or instrumental solo. In popular music the instruction 'vamp till ready' indicates that a simple short passage is to be reeated by the accompanist until the soloist is ready to begin.

Does that help, or is the language too complicated?

Best,

Why? Isn't it all chewing the same notes all over again until time to swallow and go on? Understood, thanks.
