Studio One does not allow another application to be the host. This is not possible in the current version of Rewire in Studio One. As with most DAW's, Studio One is not allowed to run as a slave.

Re: Rewire Notion to S1 and vice versa
It took a few days, during which time I did a bit of reading and experimenting, but the definitive answer is that it is possible to record real-time MIDI in a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) application and NOTION 4 simultaneously, provided the DAW application supports the required ReWire 2 functionality (or nearly so), which is the case at present with Digital Performer 8 (MOTU) . . .
NOTION 4 supports all the required ReWire 2 functionality, so everything is fine in this respect . . .
The way it works is that you need to insert a few empty measures in the NOTION 4 score to provide the time required (a) to press the "Record" button in NOTION 4 and then (b) to switch quickly to Digital Performer 8 to click its "Record" button to do a "punch-in", since pressing the "Record" button in NOTION 4 causes Digital Performer 8 to start running in "Play" mode rather than "Record" mode, which as best as I can determine based on studying the ReWire 2 Software Development Kit (SDK) should be an easy thing for the MOTU folks to remedy, which I can do since among other things I am a registered Mac OS X application developer; ReWire 2 and Rack Extensions developer; and VST developer, which basically maps to not needing to do a lot of guessing regarding the various rules with respect to determining whether something can be done on the Mac when technologies and infrastructures are used correctly . . .
From a practical perspective, I am not certain why someone would want to record real-time MIDI in both the DAW application and NOTION 4 simultaneously, since the logical way to do it is to record it first in NOTION 4 so that you can work with it using music notation and then when you are happy with the edits to record the MIDI in the DAW application via a "virtual MIDI cable" where the edited MIDI is sent to the DAW application from a NOTION 4 External MIDI staff, but the question was asked, and since it is an interesting question I did a bit of researching and experimenting to determine the answer, which is that it is supported using ReWire 2 on the Mac provided the DAW application implements at least enough of the ReWire 2 specification to allow doing a "punch-in", which includes implementing more of the common transport control functionality . . .
In this regard, my perspective at present is that NOTION 4 correctly implements everything that it needs to implement and that the onus is on the DAW application, where Digital Performer 8 implements nearly all of it, except that switching Digital Performer 8 to "Record" mode in this scenario requires doing a manual "punch-in", which is fine with me . . .
Doing this in a ReWire 2 session guarantees that everything is synchronized, since this is one of the benefits of ReWire 2, which is fabulous . . .

Re: Rewire Notion to S1 and vice versa
Thanks for your confirmation........I accomplished the same thing using Studio One. I just wish I was able to establish a shortcut key in Notion to "Start Recording".
If that were available, I could set up the same key stroke that Studio One uses to start them both recording simultaneously....As long as both maintained "Focus".

Glad to help!

I had to think about it for a while and then to do some experiments, where the idea of clicking on two "Record" buttons was intriguing, with the key being to do it in a ReWire 2 session, since ReWire 2 handles the MIDI synchronization as well as the transports, and after doing the experiment with Digital Performer 8 (MOTU) as the Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) application, I did another experiment with Studio One 2.6 Producer (PreSonus) as the DAW application, and this also works nicely on the Mac, as you can see in the following YouTube video . . .

You cannot establish one shortcut to get them both to Record at the same time. The computer uses the keyboard for the application that is in Command Focus. Even on Macs when you want to setup system shortcuts, you have to have a menu item to select a system wide shortcut, but there is not a Menu Item for record in Notion.
But, when you put Notion into Record Mode, it is Standby until you press the spacebar or hit play. Maybe this will help, but I don't think it will work in Rewire.

Well, you answered a question about a shortcut key for Notion in Rewire 2.....There is one and it is the space bar!
So, I should be able to work with that.........More later, as I do some experimenting
