Saving and Retrieving VST Plug-ins and Settings

Postby idiotSavant » Wed Jun 19, 2013 11:29 pm

Does anyone know of a convenient way to save plug-ins, settings and configurations for reuse in other Notion files?

I've got a mix that I like on the first movement of a string quartet and now I'd like to transfer all those plug-ins and their settings to movements 2 and 3... Pretty tedious with 17 plug-ins and four VSL instruments...

Maybe it would be easiest to do a save as and then delete all the notation and copy the new notation in...

Ideas?

Most VST plug-ins have a way to create user-defined custom presets, which is the way I do it, and this is important because some VST plug-ins do not remember their settings when you save the NOTION 4 score and exit. Mostly this happens at present with the plug-ins from FabFilter Software Instruments, so the workaround is to create your own user-defined presets . . .

Doing a "Save As" for the NOTION 4 score is one way to clone it, where you then need to copy the music notation for each respective staff . . .

This is the easiest way to do what you want to do that I know, which is fabulous . . .

Fabulous! :)

P. S. If you have a particular NOTION 4 score with a set of instruments and effects plug-ins that you like and want to use for other compositions, you can remove all the music notation; do a "Save As"; and then add the NOTION 4 score to the set of NOTION 4 predefined templates, so that you have a blank score but with all the instruments and effects plug-ins you like. On the Mac, you do this by adding your user-defined custom NOTION 4 score to the set of predefined templates in the "Notion.app" package, where the important thing is to prefix the name of your user-defined custom NOTION 4 score with an integer, which tells NOTION 4 where to place the user-defined template in the menu item list . . .

As I recall, the last integer in the Notion Music predefined templates is "17", so the next one will be "18", which for a NOTION 4 score named "My Custom Score" will map to the correct name being "18 My Custom Score" . . .

On a Windows machine the predefined templates are in a different location, and there are some posts in the this FORUM that explain how to do it on the Mac and on Windows, so you can do a search and find them if you need more information and details on how to do it . . .

Just as an add on to what surfwhammy has so eloquently stated here:

In my file management style, I keep all of my Music together. That entails all of my Scores, Plugin Presets, Rules, Bounces (to .wav, .aif, .mp3), MIDI files, Printed Scores or PDF's, and Templates. I always know where to look for a particular VST preset based on the manufacturer. You can set the file management system up however you please, but organization that you understand will enhance your creative process by eliminating both the searching and the reconfiguring of new scores and vst presets all the time.

If you find a setup you like, Save It.

And, Save It to a location that you can find.

That is all it takes.
