Hi All-
First time poster, medium time user (about 1.5 years).
I've searched the boards and the Notion 4 manual/guide, but I can't figure out if it's possible to have a dual-install of N3 & N4.
I've got a lot of stuff cooking in N3 and I don't want to risk things barfing on me mid-project due to an N4 conversion. On the other hand, I'd like to start some newer projects with N4.
Thoughts? Experiences? Is it possible?
Thx,
Kurt

No problem on the Mac, either . . .
In fact, you can have NOTION 3 (32-bits only) installed and NOTION 4 (32-bits and 64-bits) installed, but on the Mac you need to set an option to specify how you want NOTION 4 to run, which is done on the "Get Info . . . " page for the application, where to run NOTION 4 in 32-bit mode, you check the "Open in 32-bit mode" option, which causes NOTION 4 to run in 32-bit mode the next time you start it. To switch to 64-bit mode, with NOTION 4 closed and not running, do "Get Info" and then uncheck the "Open in 32-bit mode" option, and the next time you start NOTION 4, it will run in 64-bit mode . . .
The 32-bit vs. 64-bit toggling is done on the Mac, because both modes are included in the same application package, so that there is only one "Notion.app". Running in 32-bit mode is handy when you need to use VSTi virtual instruments or VST effects plug-ins that only run in 32-bit mode, which applies to everything else that only runs in 32-bit mode. However, 64-bit mode is so much nicer that over the long run it is the best option, presuming all the VSTi and VST components in your digital music production toolkit have 64-bit versions, which at present is nearly everything, except the IK Multimedia VSTi virtual instruments, and IK Multimedia continues to say that a 64-bit version is in development, which is fine with me since I would rather they take the time do all the work correctly than to rush it . . .
I do not run Windows at present, but my understanding from reading various FORUM topics is that you can install both versions of NOTION 3 (32-bit and 64-bit) on the same machine, since each versions goes in a separate set of application folders . . .
However, while you can have NOTION 3 and NOTION 4 installed on the same machine, on the Mac you need to run them separately, which probably is the case in Windows, as well . . .
In other words, run any of the three by itself, but not two or all three at once . . .
And the rules essentially are the same for doing ReWIre, since it also requires matching the mode (32bit vs. 64-bit) . . .
Generally, there are perhaps four application that you might want to run simultaneously on the Mac, which tends to be the case in Windows, as well:
(1) a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) application like Digital Performer (MOTU) or Logic Pro (Apple) . . .
(2) NOTION (Notion Music) . . .
(3) Reason (Propellerhead Software) . . .
(4) a Video Editor application like Final Cut Studio (Apple) . . .
If you are doing ReWIre, then it is important to understand that ReWIre is not a simultaneous dual-mode technology, so it needs to be all 32-bit or all 64-bit with respect to the four types of application (see above), and some DAW applications only support 32-bit ReWire, while others support both modes (but not at the same time, so it is an "either 32-bit or 64-bit but not both" type of thing, which makes it mutually exclusive in terms of Boolean logic, where on the Mac if I need to run NOTION 3 or the 32-bit version of NOTION 4, then I use it with Digital Performer 7.24, which is 32-bit only and uses ReWIre 1.7 (32-bit), and if I need to use Reason, then I specify via Get Info that it needs to "Open in 32-bit mode", and as an example on the Mac the last time I checked Cubase only does 32-bit ReWire, so it is a DAW application that requires everything to be 32-bit (unless Steinberg has done an update) . . .
But when I want to do 64-bit ReWire, I run the 64-bit version of NOTION 4 and use Digital Performer 8.01, both of which are 64-bit applications, which also is the case with Reason 6.5, although like NOTION 4, you can run Reason 6.5 in 32-bit mode or 64-bit mode, but only one at a time . . .
Lots of FUN!
