newbee question, VSTs and midi channels

Postby ssebs » Tue Nov 06, 2012 1:28 pm

Hi,
I'm trying the notion 3 demo (while waiting for the version 3) to see if it would meet my needs.
Something that I don't understant in notion philosophy/interface: I managed to insert a Kontakt instance as VST.
But then, how to add more staffs and tell notion that these staffs lines correspond to the kontakt instance, midi channels 2, 3, and so on?
I guess that I could add a kontakt instance for each staff but this seems to be very heavy, I can't believe that this is the only solution for using VSTs instruments?
Thanks in advance for your help, Sebastien ;)

There used to be a tutorial for this in the support section, but it's not longer there in the new website.

But using an instance of Kontakt for each staff is fine, and is how things work for EWQLSO and VSL. It's not really such a big hit on resources, as all the instances share the same code.

Many thanks for your fast answers, I will try this when I'll be back at home and have the time to do it ;)
If I can do it, I prefer to assign several staffs to a vst instance, because it can optimise cpu: for example, in play, a convolution reverb can be shared between several instruments, to limit the cpu required for it.
Anyway thanks for the info about the shared memory, I was afraid that the multiple instances would multiply the needed memory.

You can also put that convolution reverb in the Notion mixer :)

Hi,
I now managed to get 2 staffs linked to the channels 1 and 2 of a (EW) play instance.
Now my problem is the staffs naming: as I created first the staff that I named "French Horns", when selecting the channel 2 for the 2nd staff, the 2nd staff is automatically named "French Horns" also, with an instrument change named "French Horns (2)". In the "tools" popup menu, even if I change the staff name (staff settings menu), the staff is not renamed.
Even more problematic, this happens only for the first staffs line. The next staffs lines are all names "Play"
How to rename properly the staffs?
Note: this is the Notion 3 demo version, maybe there is some bug which has been fixed in version 4? I'm wondering when the version 4 demo will be available (and if the introduction price will be valid until that time...).

Bill, could you explain how to do this? Is it a case of loading a Play instance into the mixer master stereo output and just having the reverb switched on but without any instruments loaded?

Thanks.

NO, I was thinking of a standalone reverb, like EW Spaces.

Oh, I see. Yes, that would be very easy! I was hoping you knew of a way to strap a Play instance across the master outs. I thought of taking advantage of that "Master" switch in Play as a means to reduce CPU resources by routing all the instruments through one of the built-in reverbs in Play. That doesn't seem to be possible. I tried but there's no option offered by Notion to insert Play into the outputs. Shame. :(
