Actually, Progression just plays all of the notes in a chord at once. It is not really an upstrum or a downstrum. You are right in thinking that the up and down bow symbols can be used for notation and the arpeggio can be used for the direction of the strum.

That's great news David. I'm not sure why that happened to you but I have seen this type of thing on the Mac side of the world before. You might still want to run the permissions repair from the disk utility to be on the safe side. Let me know if anything else comes up.
