Brian here from NOTION. We have identified this issue as being a bug in NOTION. It seems to only exist on Lion and does not occur on Snow Leopard. Thanks for your patience while we further investigate.

Re: String Contrabass won't play
You may want to go to Score>Setup... and click on gearwheel icon to the left of the double basses. This will open the Staff Settings window. Make sure that you have it assigned to the correct instrument.
