For some reason I have to print at 2400 dpi to get a really nice print... I print to pdf though, so if need be I can use the pdf to actually print physical copies

I have tried that, and on my system the lyrics remain editable even after closing/reopening the file... are you sure you're imputting text using the lyrics tool? (sorry, but just to exclude the most basic thing)...
