Although this MAY refer to only one-way communication. From one to another, but not the other way round.

Hit 'i' on the keyboard to activate the barline-cursor or choose it from the palette. Then just click with it where you want to add bars. It's a bit hidden in a way, but works well when you know it. You can also click between any bars.

I think it's currently the text-approach you suggested. But feel free to post a new topic to the "Feature requests"-section if you want to see this in the future.
